Review of creativfestival Toronto Fall 2017

I thoroughly enjoyed teaching at the Fall creativfestival  in Toronto .
It was a pleasure to meet so many wonderful new students and a pleasant surprised to see some familiar faces in class.
The event was as always well organized with a beautiful venue including spacious classrooms and excellent lighting, so important for us quilters!
Janome Canada very kindly provided all the lovely classroom machines even including the ruler feet for my class on free motion ruler work.
Of course I managed a little time in the merchants mall and have to admit to a few "treats" following me home including several additions to my ever growing collection of large cones of WonderFil threads.
Click on the direct link to creativfestival in my favorites for more information on this and coming shows.
I know I'll be looking forward to the Abbotsford show, March 16-17, 2018.

Review of Quilt Canada 2017

It was an honor and a pleasure to teach at Quilt Canada 2017!
There was a sense of anticipation and excitement in the air.
The quilts on display as always were amazing!
Participants had a wonderful variety of quilts to see, classes and lectures to attend, a fabulous merchants mall and of course they could help out at Canada's Big Quilt Bee.
Early in the year the goal was set for the Canadian Quilters Association to put out the call to celebrate Canada's 150th birthday by making 1000 quilts for kids in care at Ronald McDonald Houses across Canada. Would we make our goal? Check out the final count at the end of this post.
Here are some of the highlights from my classes.

Love the facilities at The International Centre, Mississauga.

Some of the Freeform Botanical Quilting Made Easy students hard at work.

My wonderful helper Gaile Statkus.

Did I mention that there were chocolate and jelly beans for all of my students?
Tied up in squares of ...you guessed it, Canada 150 fabric!

Make Mine Modern (Free Motion Quilting that is.)

Make Mine Modern gather around for teaching time.

Great helper Grace Kuiken!

Look at all the wonderful work! Such a fearless group.

Group instruction Straight Line Strategy.

Working through the process. So much we can do with a Walking Foot.

Such beautiful work by all!

My helper (and one of last years students) Joy Takahashi.
It was great to spend time with you Joy!

Have you noticed all of the fantastic Janome Canada 150 machines?
A huge thank you to Janome Canada for once again supplying the machines in all of  my classrooms.

Unlock the Amazing Quilter Within You.
These quilts will all be gorgeous.

                                                  Such a fun group!

                                        A Canada 150 quilt.

And look at those perfect points.

My friend and helper Pat Castonguay.
Pat was one of my helpers at Quilt Canada 2016 and I was thrilled to have her in my classroom this year.

Spending time with current friends and making new ones is one of the best parts about Quilt Canada.
Even Mrs Bobbins took a little time from her busy schedule to chat with me about quilting and of course our favorite fabrics!

And In case you haven't heard... the quilts, both finished and tops kept on coming.

We were so excited... we PASSED 1000!
And the FINAL count was a whopping 2614 quilts.

Come join me at Toronto creativfestival Oct. 26-28

I am looking forward to teaching at the Fall Toronto creativfestival.
This event will take place at The International Centre from Oct 26 to 28 with classes starting on the 25th.

My classes are;

SWEET AND SIMPLE 60 DEGREE TRIANGLE QUILT
Sixty degree triangles are simple to cut in a wide variety of sizes using nothing more than a rotary cutter and your basic 24” quilting ruler. The design possibilities for this one shape are endless.                                    Use all scraps for an old fashioned look, all floral prints for a riot of color or how about modern brights and neutrals. Even make this out of neutral tone on tones and use as a background for appliqué. Come and enjoy the fun as Julie shows you how to cut and assemble this all-time favorite quilt.
Hands On   3 Hour Workshop  Thu 9:00 to 12:00

HOW DO I QUILT MY QUILT?
Many patterns and books finish with the phrase “Quilt as Desired” leaving today's quilter unsure of how to finish their project. This class will address the decision making process quilters must go through to help them finish their quilts. The choice of quilting design, thread, needles and batting as well as how to preview and mark designs will be covered.                                       A class jam packed with tips, tricks and information.
Bring: A quilt for quilting advice and interactive group discussion.
2 Hour Interactive Demo   Thurs 1:00 – 3:00

TIPS & TRICKS FOR FREE MOTION QUILTING”
For those who have tried free motion quilting or have always wanted to.
We will discuss correct body positioning, machine tension, needle / thread / design combinations   and explore methods for learning new designs.
Interactive 1 Hour Seminar   Fri 11:00 – 12:00

FUN WITH RULERS ON YOUR DOMESTIC SEWING MACHINE
Free motion quilting with a ruler foot and specialty rulers enable quilters of all skill levels to quilt smooth curves and straight lines, even full circles with little or no marking and minimal experience. In this hands-on class we will explore the basics of moving your fabric and rulers to create a variety of fun designs.
Hands On   3 Hour Workshop  Fri 1:00 to 4:00

FAT ¼’S JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN
Our pretty little bundles of fat ¼’s have been sitting around the sewing room long enough.
Now they want to get out and have some fun! Fast and easy cutting and piecing techniques will turn these lovelies into quilts, bags, scarves, bed runners and more.
Let’s empty those storage bins as we party with our fat quarters!
2 Hour Lecture/Demo  Sat 9:00 –11:00

10 ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS THINGS TO DO WITH PRE-CUTS
Pre-cuts include fat ¼’s, 2 ½” strip sets like, charm packs of 5” squares, 10” charm packs and even triangles and hexagons. They are fun to collect, to trade and give as gifts. Let’s explore some great ways to use your stash of pre-cuts so that you can buy more without “guilt”.
Placemats, pillows, table runners and of course, quilts are just some of the “fabulous” things we can do with pre-cuts.
2 Hour Lecture/Demo   Sat 1:00 – 3:00

You can click on the link to creativfestival in My Favorite Sites for further information and to pre-register or register when you arrive at the show.
