Hands on Classes
112-Drawing with Needle and Thread
1 Day: Wednesday, June 15, 2016
Skill Level: All Levels
Students will learn how to edit a photo of a building (barn, house or historical or funky) to create a line drawing suitable for thread sketching, how to transfer their design to fabric, how to adjust the tension on their sewing machine, correct stabilization as well as what batting, needle and threads to use.
We will explore simple free motion stitching techniques to create visual depth, light and dimension using several colors of thread as well as when and where to use multi-color or variegated threads.
Artwork Provided
Students who wish to work from their own photo (copyright free) may E mail a maximum of two photos to the instructor up to two weeks prior to class for approval and editing. Your family home, a historical building, barn or lighthouse would all be good subject matter.
Skill Level: All levels
We will explore body positioning for smooth stitching, how to adjust machine tension to correct issues such as eyelashing and pin pricking, correct needle / thread / design and batting combinations, layering and hand positioning. Students will stitch a sampler of several designs with emphasis on the difference between using fine thread for a dainty heirloom look and heavier thread for a more modern look.
Teardrops, pebbles, micro-stippling, mini ferns, roses, daisy stipple, orange peel and mini feathers are just a few of the beautiful, free motion background designs students will learn how to stitch.
412-Free Form Feathers 1 Day
Saturday, June 18, 2016
Skill Levels: All Levels
Free Form Feathers are unmarked feathers that we create as we go. Feather Quilting can look very traditional or modern depending on the thread used and the style of your stitching.
Students will learn several beautiful feather designs including curved, double, bounce back, with and without a stitched spine and free flowing background feathers. We will explore the use of a variety of thread types and weights, when to use variegated threads and effective echo quilting.
Students will stitch 10” by 15” samples of each feather style.
Lectures
Popcorn Can Quilts
For years I would store my leftover strips of fabric in popcorn cans. The cans look pretty and keep the strips dust and wrinkle free and safe from sunlight but….it’s time for these carefully stored fabrics to become quilts (before the house falls down from the weight). Come and watch as beautiful quilts, some classic, some modern emerge from the “Popcorn Cans”!
TIME: Thursday, June 16, 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
How Do I Quilt My Quilt
Many patterns and books finish with the phrase "Quilt as Desired" leaving the modern quilter unsure of how to finish their project. This class will address the decision making process quilters must go through to help them finish their quilts. The choice of quilting design, thread, needles and batting as well as how to preview and mark designs will be covered. A seminar jam packed with tips, tricks and samples.
Each student will have the opportunity to bring one quilt for quilting advice and interactive group discussion.
TIME: Thursday, June 16, 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Simply click on the Canadian Quilters Association link to register.
I hope to see you there !
