Julies Name Game - New Free Motion Quilting Design #260

A free motion quilting design of yellow Sunflowers
New Free Motion Quilting Design #260 "Hope For Peace"

This Free Motion Quilting design simply celebrates the spirit of the Ukrainian people.

The winning name was chosen by popular vote (Facebook and Instagram) at 6:00 PM (Pacific) on Sunday, March 6, 2022.

This design is now called “Hope For Peace”.

Thank you and congratulations to Irene Harvalias of New Westminster B.C. for suggesting this very appropriate winning name!

To stitch this design, start with a simple circle.

To stitch this FMQ design start with a simple circle
Start with a simple circle

Next fill your circle with pebbles.
These are stitched by going one and a half times around a small circle.
Don't worry about making them too even.

Small circles of stitching fill the larger one
Stitch small circles or "pebbles" inside the larger circle

You could stitch your design with all one color thread but I thought it would look more like real Sunflowers if the centers were darker.

I stitched all of my centers with WonderFil FabuLux FB35 "Midas Touch".

Be sure to leave enough room so that you will be able to fit the petals around them.

Once all of the centers were stitched I re-threaded my machine with FabuLux FB12 "Yellow Yellow" and stitched nice elongated petals all around each center.

Both threads are variegated so they add lots of detail to the design.

Yellow elongated petals stitched around a center circle
Add elongated petals around the center

You're not done yet.
Before you cut your thread go around the center circle one more time and add some long and short lines inside the petals.
This helps to add dimension to the flowers.

Stitched lines inside flower petals add dimension
Stitch inside the petals for added dimension

Now move over to the next center circle and add the petals to it.

It's OK if they touch or even smoosh into one another a bit as this makes the flowers look like they are overlapping.

Stitched flowers that touch appear to overlap
Flowers appear to overlap when they touch

Using two colors of thread does take a little more effort but I think the results are well worth it.
You don't have to switch back and forth, just stitch all the centers first then add all the flowers and it really goes quite fast.

Please feel free to stitch this design on your charity quilts to add extra meaning.

Remember to tag me and send pictures so I can share.
