Recent Teaching Trip to Thunder Bay

Last month I had the privilege to teach several classes for the Thunder Bay Quilters Guild.
This dynamic quilt guild is full of talented members.
I had a wonderful time, made many new friends and as always enjoyed being back in Ontario.

Prince Arthur's Landing Lake Superior

I was treated to a walk around Prince Arthur's Landing.
This is a wonderful waterfront park by Lake Superior that hosts both summer and winter festivals.
It is a hub for artists with many wonderful sculptures and art installations.
There were few boats as the ice had just left the lake though I am sure that the marina is now in full swing.
My tour of the area was completed with a lovely meal at Bight overlooking the water.
(Everyone took really good care of me! Thanks All!)

Day One - Color Blend Quilt class sample

Day One; Our class was Color Blend Quilt

The class learned how to blend and combine fabrics in an unexpected way to accent or hide the piecing of the design.
They all worked with my pattern of "The Fanny Bay Star Medallion Quilt".
This quilt way named after beautiful Fanny Bay on Vancouver Island in B.C.

Lots of fun was had by all. Great job ladies!

Peggy even arrived at her next class with her top finished! WOW!

Day Two -  Botanical Free Motion Quilting

Day Two: Our class was Botanical Free Motion Quilting

Leaves, vines ferns and more .... the class drew then stitched and even took time to play with a variety of threads.
What a wonderful job everyone!

I even got to go for a backyard BBQ.
Great food, friendship and quilts (coconuts and paintings) to see.
Thanks Laura for taking me home to meet your family.
I loved every minute.

Day Three - Thread Painting

Day Three: Our class was Thread Painting - Harmony the Hedgehog

These lovely ladies are game for anything!
For thread painting the group learned how to create a simple fusible applique then apply both straight line and zig zag free motion quilting to give the appearance of fur, quills (spines) and skin.
Several had to scoot away early so I'll show more if they send me pictures:)

Look at this... Vicky is almost done !

Lecture - Quilts from Popcorn Cans

The last order of business for me (besides another great dinner with the girls) was a lecture / demo on Quilts From Popcorn Cans at the monthly guild meeting.
The name of the demo refers to my habit of storing fabric scraps in the cans that pre-made popcorn come in.
These cans make nice decorator accents... especially as no one realizes that there is fabric in them.
We had a great time exploring a variety of quilts that can be made to use up all that scrap fabric.

The meeting included a great show and tell.
Peggy even showed her quilt top from the Blended Quilt Class,
way to go Peggy!

In addition to all the individual quilts there was a showing of this years
SNIP, RIP, DROP and PASS Christmas Cheer Teddy Bear Quilts.

These are just a few of the wonderful SNIP, RIP, DROP and PASS teddy bear quilts.

Every year the Thunder Bay Quilters Guild contributes to the local Christmas Cheer fund by making quilts, pillowcases or sleeping bags for teddy bears or other stuffed animals.

More SNIP, RIP, DROP and PASS teddy bear quilts.

What a lovely thank you card and gift.

I was given a lovely thank you card, guild pin and tote bag as a parting gift.
The only part I don't like about teaching is having to say goodbye to all of my wonderful new friends.
Hope to see you all soon!
