A Selection of Student Work

I love it when my students are excited by what they have achieved!

Scroll down for some photos of student work and what they had to say about their class experiences.

Here are some of the beautiful projects completed durung my "One Meter Challenge" Virtual Workshop with the Whistler Valley Quilter’s Guild in October of 2022.

How often have you seen a fabric so beautiful that you just couldn’t leave it behind and bought “just a meter” because you didn’t know what you would do with it ?

This design challenge workshop is intended to give participants the skills and confidence to add some additional fabrics, cut into those beauties and use simple piecing techniques to create something truly wonderful.

I just love seeing the amazing results!

Her choice of fabrics makes this simple quilt extremly effective!

Lisa Taylor used what she learned to piece both the front and back of her batik quilt.
What a great idea!

A square gold and blue quilted table topper
Table Topper by Lorna Doucette

Lorna Doucette made not only a gorgeous table topper but two table runners as well.

A gold and blue quilted table runner

She says she cut too many squares for the topper so decided to use them up with the runners.

I love how different they each look while at the same time being perfectly coordinated!

Table runner by Carolyn Szabo

Carolyn Szabo used a charm pack of 5” squares and one meter of background fabric to create this beautiful table runner.

The quilting was done with 28 weight Aurifil thread and a slightly longer stitch length to really make the stitching pop!

Carolyn says ...
I can’t believe I made this in a day!
That’s a first for me.

Well done everyone!

Next up, some of the spectacular finishes from my Free Motion Quilting Workshops.

Gold stitching on a dark red backgroumd fabric
Inspired Free Motion Quilting

Here is another spectacular finish from the “Inspired Free Motion Quilting” workshop that I taught at Quilt Canada in the Spring of 2022.

Beautifully stitched by Anna-Marie Lawrie.
I love the rich effect of the gold thread on burgundy.

Anna-Maria says that though she used a couple of different fill designs the overall effect is the same.

I think her table runner is gorgeous!

Ellen Gallant of the Campbell River Friendship Quilters took my “Ferns and Favourites”, free motion quilting workshop in October '22 and shared these photos with me.
I think her finished piece is stunning.

Ellen says “WooHoo it’s done”!
She even had so much fun that she created some of her own designs.

Awesome job Ellen!

I'm thrilled to be able to share photos sent to me by Karen Robinson of her stunning finished table runner from Quilt Canada 2022.
Karen attended my Workshop “Inspired Free Motion Quilting”.
I am so proud of her!

In this workshop, students learn how to divide areas to create visual interest and design separation, how to use a walking foot or ruler quilting to add straight line quilting, how to use quilting stencils to add a central focus point and how to stitch four of my most popular “Julies Name Game” Free Motion Quilting designs.

We all had a wonderful day together at the Vancouver Convention Center with an additional follow up by Zoom for anyone who wished to attend.

Karen shared with me that while she was sewing the binding on at guild someone asked her what embroidery machine she had used to stitch the design. She’s not sure that the person who asked believed her when she said it was all hand guided free motion quilting.

Well done Karen!

Lynda H in her FMQ embellished teal boiled wool vest
A free motion quilted vest by Lynda Hackney

Lynda is an extraordinary garment sewer who loves to use machine quilting techniques as embellishment for a true, designer effect.

This beautiful vest is the result of Lynda attending a class with me at Snip & Stitch Sewing Centre on how to use coloring books as inspiration to create your own free motion quilting designs.

A wash away stabilizer was used to transfer the design without marking directly on the garment so the fabric needed to be washed prior to stitching. The result was a washed, slightly felted wool.

After previewing many thread colors to find the just the right one we decided that the best option was to run two threads through the needle at once.

Lynda discovered that if you start with two full spools of thread so that they run evenly you will have fewer thread breaks.

I think that the result was perfect!

Here's what Lynda has to say:

"Classes with Julie are fun and informative.

Julie is always very supportive of students wishing to apply the class knowledge to personal projects.

I always feel inspired by taking one of Julie’s classes."

Thank you Lynda. I love it when my students are willing to take an idea and run with it!

Gail R with her free motion quilted table runner
Free Motion Quilting Masterclass by Gail Raper

Gail has always been confident with stippling and basic free motion quilting but wanted to see if she could stitch more complex designs.

She took my Free Motion Quilting Masterclass at      Snip & Stitch Sewing Centre in Nanaimo B.C.

I think you can tell from her smile that Gail is thrilled with the results.

I taught a Virtual Workshop on Walking Foot Quilting with the Saskatoon Quilter's Guild.

Several of the participants have been kind enough to share photos of their finished work.

A pale blue walking foot quilt with polka dot binding
Walking Foot Lap Quilt by Cathy Drew

This quilt is by Cathy Drew.

I love the way she used a light fabric on top and a deep, rich color on the back with the playful polka dot binding to finish it off.

Cathy says that though she has been taking classes for 12 to 13 years, this is the first time she has finished a class project.

I'm so proud of her for the great job she did on this one!

A watermelon colored walking foot quilt with rainbow binding
Walking Foot Lap Quilt by Cheryl Bock

Another Walking Foot Quilt from the Saskatoon Quilter's Guild Virtual Workshop.

This beauty is by Cheryl Bock.

The watermelon color combined with the rainbow binding is so creative and cheerful!
She even used an animal print on the back.

Cheryl says;

"The concept of measuring a section of the quilt, adding registration marks and then using them to create a design was new to me and will hopefully lead to more intricate and interesting designs on future quilts."

I look forward to seeing more exciting quilts from Cheryl.

A Walking Foot Christmas quilt by Ruth Anne Appl

A fabric of tiny trees quilted with a walking foot
The back of Ruth Anne's Walking Foot Quilt

Ruth Anne Apple, also from the Saskatoon Quilter's Guild decided to make a Christmas quilt with her Walking Foot Quilt.

The Snowman print is adorable but Ruth Anne said it was difficult to see her stitching on it so she flipped her quilt over and stitched it from the back.

Not only was this a great solution but just look at how beautifully she has lined up all of those tiny (and linear) trees with her stitching lines.

Great job Ruth Anne!

A Color Blend quilt in pinks cream and burgandy
Color Blend Quilt by Peggy Skillen

Peggy Skillen of Thunder Bay Ontario took a workshop with me on Blended Color Theory and made this beautiful rendition of my pattern "Fanny Bay Star Medallion"

She did a wonderful job with both her color choices and quilting.

Peggy entered her quilt into the 2019 Superior Quilt Show.

Quite simply, I think it's gorgeous!

A lap quilt made of four patches and squares
Simple Comfort Lap Quilt by Judy Payne

I used to call this my "Fat Six Pack" quilt as it was a quick and easy quilt that I designed for my local quilt shop to give away with their bundles of six fat quarters.

Judy says that it is her favorite, go to baby quilt and that she has made dozens over the years.

Thanks Judy!

The instructions for this quilt are on my Free Patterns Page.
