In this Workshop you will learn how to set up your machine for successful Free Motion Quilting, the importance of the correct needle/thread/design combination, correct body and hand positioning, when and how to adjust your sewing machine tension, how to correct common issues such as skipped stitches, eyelashing and shredding or breaking thread.

Students will stitch a series of beautiful Free Motion Quilting designs selected to encourage the development of smooth hand movement and fingertip control.

This Workshop includes individual help with machine setup prior to class and unlimited email follow up.

For years and years, I have stitched this as a basic tension test.

When a student is having issues with their machine, I stitch this to check and see if it is a machine or needle problem. 

The combination of curves, straight lines and quick reversals of direction show me how the machine is working, however …… I’ve never really considered this to be a design in its own right, until now.

New Free Motion Quilting Design #354 "Blooming Christmas"

This new FMQ design was inspired by a beloved and old fashioned flower known as the Christmas Rose.

To accomplish the colour and pattern separation in this design it is stitched in three parts.

The flower centres are stitched first to determine the spacing of the pattern.

The flower petals are then stitched once clockwise around the centres then a second time to add the internal echoes.

To complete the design, simple leaves form a background fill around the flowers.

New Free Motion Quilting Design #351 "Holly Jolly".

This design is based on my design #351 “Holly Jolly”.

I wanted to add some red berries in keeping with the beautiful contrast of red and green found in real Holly.

Variegated thread would be OK but to accomplish the colour separation that I want, this design has been quilted twice.

The leaves were quilted first then I followed the looping pathway a second time to add the berries.
